Works with Xbox One controller!! Read on for explanation...
Okay so here's why I bought this cable: I have wired headphones that I like to use for multiple purposes, including gaming. In addition, I also have a great, but inexpensive lavaliere microphone that I can clip to my shirt. I mostly game on my Xbox One S, but I don't own a gaming headset - ya know, the headphones with a mic already attached to it. Well, if you are poor like me, and you want an easy and inexpensive way to have a gaming headset, then get this cable. This cable plugs into your controller, then you can have a mic plugged in the mic port, and any wired headphones of your choice plugged into the headphone port. Lavaliere mics on Amazon are around $10 - $20, and wired headphones can be inexpensive as well. The point is, you can literally use any type of headphone and mic you want with this cable, which is convenient if you don't want to succumb to gaming headsets, or simply can't afford them, or already have a nice pair of headphones lying around that you can use...just get a mic and this cable! . Aside from the Xbox controller, whether you are gaming, streaming, making videos, etc., this cable gives you options. How it works: What's amazing about this cable is that you can still use it as a headphone splitter ( Y-cable). In other words, the mic port can be used for another set of headphones too which increases its options even further. Okay, technical stuff...the cable allows analog signals to be sent OUT the headphone port to headphones or speakers, but the mic port allows analog signals to be sent IN to whatever device you have the cable plugged into. Think of a laptop: usually there is a mic port, and a headphone port. You plug your headphones into the headphone port when you wanna listen to Youtube or music. You use the mic port for, well, a microphone - for streaming, recording voice overs, etc. This cable is like having those options, but in a portable state and on top of it all, it also works as a headphone splitter which is awesome! So in a nutshell: both headphone and mic port can send signals OUT to something, but only the mic port can send signals IN to something. Additionally, this cable has THREE rings on the male plug which is an indicator for a mic. Basic headphone splitters only have TWO rings on the male plug. Get this cable if you want to be able to use a mic and a headphone at the same time for one device. Build quality: Build is good. The metal heads of both the female ports and male jack are very sturdy. Signals are clean also. The little section that holds the split ports together is cool and very convenient. Obviously, you must simply take care of it and not throw it around like a dog toy. The cable is sturdy, but its not impenetrable.

A "Whale" of a Deal
Until I plugged my earphones into my new HP Laptop, I had no idea that I would need a cable like this until I read the computer's instructions. Anyway, I record and analyze the songs of Humpback whales so I must have earphones. After researching what I needed, I went through the Amazon offerings, found this splitter, and bought one. I also attach recorders and hydrophones to my computer during the course of my studies. with sound so I expected, given the price, the typical thin-cabled, quickly-fraying computer plug-ins. I was quite pleasantly surprised when, on opening the package the splitter arrived in, to find a heavy cabled product that produced excellent quality sound in each side of my earphone. It looked to me then that the connections were gold-plated and, after re-reading the description on Amazon, found that to be the case. I require that due to the use I put them to around salt water. The cable employed is heavier as are the reinforcements at the male and female connections than the cable on my earphones and on the one on my pre-amp. I don’t work for this company. I don’t know anyone who does. Check my other recommendations. In short, outstanding quality, excellent performance, at an excellent price. Isn’t that what you’re looking for? Bill

UPDATED: Great when it works...
UPDATED: The seller immediately reached out to me after my original review and promptly sent another cable free of charge. This new cable works well, and so far has not had any problems. Would recommend this product and seller. I initially had high expectations for this product. Upon opening the package, I was impressed at the construction and material of the adaptor-- compared to similar products I've used in the past, this adaptor seemed to be well made and polished. However, my experiences using it have been extremely inconsistent. I use this adaptor between my PC headset and my PS4 controller. Sometimes it works perfectly. Most of the time, though, the mic either doesn't work at all, or even worse, it creates an audio loop that only the people I'm playing with can here. Extremely annoying for them and for me. I have tried plugging/unugging, spinning the cable all which ways, and using different controllers to get a better connection, but nothing seems to work. The frustrating part is that it will work sometimes, and I cannot isolate the issue. I wish I could give this a 5-star review, but with the amount of trouble I've had just getting the most basic function to work, I believe a 2-star is generous.

It did not work as a mic/ headphone splitter for Arturia Microfreak vocoder
I’m sure it’s a fine product for its intended use but it just would not send mic signal to the Microfreak, no matter how high I set the gain. Without the splitter, the mic worked perfectly. As soon as I plugged in the splitter, nothing gets through. I tried it on my laptop and the microphone input works great, so I know it’s just not getting along with the Microfreak. However, the headphone volume is very low no matter what device I use it with.

Since most laptops and smart devices these days combine the headphone and microphone socket TRS sockets into a single TRRS socket. That is fine if you're using a single headset which combines those functions into one TRRS plug, there will be time that you need to separate the audio in and audio out functions, such as when live streaming or podcasting. This adapter does the job well. The chord is sturdy and the metal ends are quite ergonomic, shaped in a way that makes them easy to grip for plugging and unplugging.

When a mic is connected, the audio becomes mono.

It made some headphones that were destined for the bin usable again.
