A subtle evolution of the well-known Seaman Sound
It's probably simply because the dance music scene has changed that Dave Seaman's new offering for the GU series differs from the previous few. It's been some years since the series bosses used his face and name to promote a release. He has always put out extremely safe and predictable compilations, and along with the likes of Nick Warren has really helped define the whole GU sound. But times change and the music audience changes, and recent GU releases by Emerson and Lavelle have clearly shown a move towards a lower IQ, more indie-rock sound, designed for instant appeal to those who have relatively unspectacular expectations, having emerged as they have from the guitar-rock scene of their teen years and looking for familiarity on the dance scene. So....Seaman evidently discovered that the type of tracks he included before just aren't available any more. There's no material out there to compile a musical journey. It needs to start and finish in exactly the same place and visit very few different places in between. No time left for that progressive evolution of sounds - it's got to be instantly familiar from the first note onwards. And he's actually managed the transition quite well, using more shorter tracks and grouping them in bands of commonality, rather than just throwing them together as Carl Cox and Felix the Housecat did for their GU releases. The moment the beat section of the first number kicks in, about a minute into the mix, you know exactly where it's at and where it will stay unwaveringly for the next two hours. Looks like we will have to hang on until Nick Warren gets another go at the controls to have a truly exceptional album on our hands - but this is pretty good compared to many of the other dance mixes on the market right now.

The Seaman Standard
Agree with the previous comments that this is very 'Dave Seamany', but to be honest that's all I wanted. I much prefer his more evolved style from this earlier GU days, so as such this is my favourite of his GU mixes. Not quite as collosal as his Renaissance or Therapy mixes (which all have their own special places in my heart so go buy them!). Another quality addition to the family.

First to last *****
Another great City from Global Underground. I have all of the releases from the original Tony de Vit and this is just as good as the first.

Worth a Spin
Love Dave Seaman. Worth a Spin but sadly not as impressive as his other GU mixes. 6/10

The great comeback of His Majesty Dave Seaman on G.U !!!!!
Eight years, it took eight long years to finally see the return of Dave Seaman on the dj mixes Global Underground !!! For those whom Global Underground means nothing, it is an absolutely mythical British label that produces here with Dave Seaman, its 39th compilation since the very first made by Tony De Vit in 1998, Tony De Vit Tel Aviv. These double dj sets were made by men such as Nick Warren, Sasha, Dave Seaman, Darren Emerson, John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia and Paul Oakenfold, all legendary British djs/producers who marked themselves the entire history of progressive music in U.K. in the 90's. After a first redoubtable opus, "Buenos Aires 012" made in 1999 which sailed between big prog-house and trancyl beats, the British marked the history of G.U. the year after by realizing a real masterpiece in the story of the label with the very trancyl "Cap Town 016" which keeps on being nowadays one of the very best of the serie. Then, it took three years to see again the British taking back his collaboration with G.U and realizing this time with "Melbourne 022" a double set very different from what he was used to offer us before but which was enrolling the new course of action dictated by Global Underground, namely more house/prog house than trancyl sets! Since this third realization, I didn't believe I would see Dave Seaman coming back someday at G.U but after the return of his accomplice Nick Warren on the excellent "Lima 035", we could give us the right of dreaming about the Englishman's return. I therefore welcomed his return with a great pleasure while wondering what he was going to lay us, musically. It must be said that since 2002, the Englishman has been busy and realized some DJ sets for the Masters Series of the label Renaissance and his "This Is Audiotherapy" and "Therapy Sessions" for his own label Audiotherapy. Turned to a more prog-house, deep tech and even electro-minimalist style, I knew that I wouldn't find the atmosphere of "Cap Town" or "Buenos Aires" but I was convinced that just as Nick Warren on "Lima 035", Dave Seaman would release an exceptional double set as he knows so well. Good intuition for my part on this one! Listening to the first set, the first thing that struck me was the ultra-slow tempo taken by the DJ, a very quiet but not annoying set that envelops us in a special aura and which musical spreads bewitch us. Upon listening to the intro signed by DJ Koze with "Blume Der Nacht", we realize once again that we're going outside the boxes to attend a musical feast concocted by Master Seaman. This very lounge and deeper beginning of set is perfectly mastered as it implements this rhythmic that automatically makes us go inside the music and follow its every meanders. You all have lived such a moment to know that it's very good and in general it will make you spend a great moment. This is the case here while I'm writing these lines along with the excellent "B4 Spring" by James Teej on my second listening of the first set. After Mikroboy and the great "Deeper" and "Chabad" by Audio Junkies, Dave Seaman will accelerate the tempo while remaining in this trippy vibe thanks to 16 Bit Lolitas, Georg Levin and the very housy "Understand This Groove" signed Jet Project. You can feel the temperature rising up gradually such as the music which picks up with a beat more sustained but the Englishman manages to keep this hypnotic atmosphere, this little personal touch that literally glues us to his set. The end of the first set is itself decidedly more progressive with "Tiger" by Moonbeam remixed by Roland M Dill who signs himself the next track "Taurine On A Sunday" remixed by Egbert and ends in a very deeper remix of Tom Middleton on "Triangle & Strings" by Glenn Morrison. After this beautiful first set, Dave Seaman will continue with a second absolutely masterful mix which is likely to move more than one!!! Just as in the first, the Englishman will reward us with an amazing intro track signed Yousef "Come Home", phenomenally remixed by Dave's lifelong friend, Alexander Coe aka Sasha. This remix completely blown me away and made me explore new sensations still unknown. From the outset, we can clearly hear that the Englishman wants to give a more progressive tone to his work without being too aggressive so that the cut is not too sharp with his first set, as perfectly testifies the extraordinary Guy Boratto's remix of "Sycamore Feeling" by Trentemoller. The rest is a pure bliss of progressive-house effluvia with headlining the huge "Polar" by James Talk which will certainly take you in a world from which you wouldn't want to be taken off and "Homecoming" by Barry Jamieson& Charlie May. From Glenn Morrison to Applescal through a mash up of Dubfire and Quivver, Dave Seaman completely wanders into a world he knows by heart masters on the fingertips, taking time to slip his "Vorahung", an excellent track he co-produced with Josh Gabriel. At the end of the set, Mr Seaman rewards us with a wonderful mash up between "At Les" by Carl Craig and "Too Hard To Breath" by Spitzer and he takes the opportunity to quietly drop the pressure generated since the beginning of the listening of this double mix. Well, this compilation ends, unfortunately too fast to me, but it is really good for the Global Underground series, providing an excellent musical selection and a thundering mixing by Sir Seaman. In other words, you like prog-house, this compilation is for you!!! You don't know prog-house or just a bit, this compilation is for you!!! Thank you again Mister Seaman for this great moment, you really are an ace!!!!

I remember the first Global Underground album I bought. I was 16 and had recently been introduced to trance music and raves. I knew next to nothing about what to look for but I knew I NEEDED to have more of that sound in my life. I rolled to the record store (sadly, a dying type of establishment) where a case sat filled with what looked to be the goods. Unlike any other time in my life, I was lost and had to ask for a recommendation. Looking back, it was as if I had no idea what to score, but I needed a fix. I can smile about that now and think how fortunate I was that the kid behind the counter had some sense about him. He handed me Dave's GU012 : Buenos Aires set and said "this is it". I don't think it left my car's CD player for 6 months. It's hard to explain the idea of "quality" electronic music to folks; in a sense, it's like pornography and you know it when you hear it. And with GU012, I was entirely hooked. I learned how to spin and while the drugs and partying faded, I don't think I'll ever let the choons go. I will be the rude old codger jamming out to something like GU243 as I roll around in my wheelchair and think how wonderful life is. I've been hungry to know what the next GU installment would be every time one comes out. I've written about this iconic series and it has provided the soundtrack to some of the most important moments of my life. All that to say that I had huge expectations for GU39. They've been fulfilled and then some. Dave has created in this set a lasting mark and shown that he truly is a pillar upon which electronic music stands. Sitting here as he's dropped into James Talk's 'Polar', I can feel the excitement of the music hitting my nerves. This mix seems to transcend borders: if it's hot, flagrant beats you seek - you will find them in tracks like Peter Horrevort's 'Bloody Hands', if you want to kick back with a mojito and watch that stunning brunette entice you to join her on the dancefloor, you've got Yousef's 'Come Home' (followed by the stellar 'Sycamore Feeling'). I would have happily paid $100 for this album and it's not going anywhere for a long, long time. I hesitate to do it, but I've got nearly everything that Andy & James have put out and I'll say that GU39 ranks among the top 5 sets they've ever put their names to. Don't wait another minute. Buy this now.

I am not going to say much here. I am a 39 year old who has been following Dave for years, have been a fan of tech for a couple of decades. Once again he amazes me with the energy and the flow of his choice of music. If you are new or (as me) old in trance/dance music, BUY THIS! This is the best cd I have bought in two years. You will not regret it. PS - CD2 is better than 1
