how does the cord storage feature work?

There is a hollow space in the base where the cord tucks inside. There is no mechanical apparatus involved. On a side note: this is a fantastic machine. I have owned a kitchenaid and a general electric model in the past and this is the most simplistic to click into position and operate of any of the three.

How well does this process/puree small volumes ? What about chopping garlic or nuts...does it mince them well?

It does a really good job. I used it to make a small batch of cashew cheese. It minced the nuts easily then when I added the other ingredients it puréed well despite only being a small batch

How fine and smooth purees can I make in this? Does it leave coarse particles in the purees?

A key function of any food processor is to make purees. The Hamilton Beach 12 cup, turns out a very very coarse paste and purees. No matter how long you process the puree, it will not develop past a certain point. If you need the processor for vegetable prepping, it works as expected.

Does it chop coarsly? Like onions and celery etc?

I used it to chop celery & onion for turkey dressing at Thanksgiving. It worked fine.
