Part z-grade E.T. ripoff, part McDonalds/Coke infomercial; it truly has to be seen to be believed. It is also the type of film which could only have been made in the glorious 80's. Most bad movies have only one or two memorable scenes. "Mac and Me" on the other hand hits the ground running in terms of laughably bad set pieces and creative decisions somehow managing to top itself with each jaw droppingly bad scene. It transcends its obvious ineptness and badness to become something strangely watchable and entertaining but for all of the wrong reasons. The film has developed a passionate cult following over the years with one of its biggest fans being actor Paul Rudd. (Do a search on YouTube for some added hilarity in terms of his appearances on Conan O'Brien and how he manages to integrate Mac and Me into each one.)"Mac and Me" celebrates its 30th anniversary by getting a collector's edition blu-ray release courtesy of the fine folk at Shout Factory. The film had only been available on bare bones DVD prior to this blu-ray edition.In terms of picture quality, the film unfortunately did not get a new HD scan for this release as Shout Factory had to use an existing HD master provided by MGM. Presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the film looks pretty solid despite obviously being derived from an older HD master. Sporting a meaty bit rate staying in the mid 30's for the bulk of the 99 minute film, no compression artifacts are seen. Detail is a nice step up from the DVD release and everything overall looks good all things considered. While it would have been nice if Shout Factory had been able to do a new 2K scan for this release, the fact that "Mac and Me" is now on blu-ray is a bit of a minor miracle in and of itself.Audio is presented in 2 channel lossless quality sounding good with decent separation.
