Greenwood is much easier to work with hand tools. If you have power than any hardwood will do just stay away from any that are toxic, or have a strong order. I have also made kuksas by laminating dry 1" thick hardwood broads together. Your best bet for green wood is to contact someone who supplies firewood locally. **Q: Does this wood split while carving? the basswood i purchased at hobby lobby splits easily (possibly due to kiln drying?). if it splits, i quits.** A: You may have got a batch from Hobby Lobby that was old and dried out. Our wood is milled, kiln dried while retaining 8-10% moisture and sold within a few months of being cut. Sharp knife, shallow cuts and you will find out wood butter smooth. **Q: Soft enough for a kid to sand for science project?** A: Yes. I used this set for a Cub Scout whittling project.
