Under an Eave or deck rail is preferred. If this outdoor sensor is somewhere where the sun can hit it, and feel the extra warmth from the sun it will read warmer than it is really outside: The maximum transmitting range to the projection clock is 330 feet in open air not including walls. Place the display and sensor next to each other with nothing in-between. After 15 minutes insert the batteries into the sensor then plug the AC adapter into the projection clock and the wall outlet. And since the display on the unit is LCD, you can only see that if the room is lit. So, the room lighting determines which display you see. **Q: The outside temperature does not show on my ceiling, just dashes. The time works fine. I don't have instructions for adjusting.** A: I found that if I just took out all batteries, and unplugged the clock, then reinserted the batteries quickly in the transmitter, then the clock, it reset everything and all worked properly.If that does not work, you will need to reset the outdoor temp sensor. From the instructions "If the time of inserting the batteries into the transmitter takes longer than 1-2 minutes from the time of inserting the batteries into the projection clock, temperature reception problems may occur. When changing the batteries in the transmitter, the project clock need to be reset". To do this "remove all batteries from the unit and unplug the AC/DC adapter.
