The test for bacteria took a few days for final results because you have to let any potential bacteria grow. Luckily our results were negative for bacteria..but I wanted to confirm the validity of the test (just to make sure...) so I totally popped a dog turd into the container after I confirmed negative results from our well water. Sure enough, the next day...the test was positive for bacteria! I just wanted some confirmation that the test was actually doing what it is meant to, and didn't want to be drinking bad water! Only a lab can test for Salmonella. **Q: Turned yellow & horrible disgusting smell coming from bottle that was tightly screwed** A: Correction! IF you kept the bottle for LONGER than 48 hours it will eventually turn yellow. IF the bottle remained purple up to 48 hours, the water is not contaminated. A yellow color, along with odor IS possible if you keep the jar LONGER than 48 hours. This is caused by the break-down of the nutrients in the jar.
