I, used it on Magnesium after etching with Borax and baking soda mixed. After drying I, used this prime 4 light coats over 4 days 1200 wet sand paper. I, then coated with primer for the paint ! 3 coats wet sad 3 coats of final coat rubbed out with fine polishing compound.I, did this project in Nov 19. So far so good. **Q: What type of paint can be applied on top of the primer? any paint? sprays? water based? oil based? are there any restrictions?** A: I would recommend staying with the same brand of paint for both primer and top coat. Although the SEM primer seems to work well with most top coats, I had a bad experience using it with a Rustoleum top coat. After priming bare aluminum with the SEM self-etch and letting it cure overnight, I applied a Rustoleum top coat. Within a few hours both the primer and the top coat pealed off. I spoke with the the SEM and the Rustoleum technical folks but neither knew exactly what caused this. Both, however, recommended sticking with the same brand for primer and top coat. I would recommend doing some test sprays, letting the primer cure the recommended length of time before applying the top coat. Note that the SEM self-etch is acetone based, and this might cause a problem with topcoats that use other bases, especially if the SEM has not been cured long enough. **Q: I have stripped aluminum bare. self etching primer, then primer, then top coat? are all these these paints made by sem?** A: All i can tel u that the image is sem **Q: Is this the same as zinc chromate primer?** A: I do not have the can anymore. So I cannot read the ingredients. However I do not think it contains zinc chromate...which is used for marine and auto applications. This stuff works great for bonding to bare aluminum parts that will need to be painted.
