## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are these good for sifting home made compost**
A: I have the 1/2 and the 1/4 units. I nest the 1/2 over the 1/4, over a 5 gallon bucket. One shovel full at a time, shake a bit back and forth, and throw the big stuff back into my "working compost". the compost needs to be a bit on the dry side for it to work, otherwise the wire gets coated with wet compost stuff and kind of clogs up. another thing I found was if you think you can bang the thing upside down on something hard to get the clogs out, it works 4 or 5 times then breaks. maybe if you had something kind of rubber like to bang on, but I was using a dead tree next to my pile. Better to just brush off the wires with your gloves, else, like me, you're reviewing your order list and ordering another one to replace the one you broke. I had some year old compost, really dry, and the stuff was like black gold after the sieving. My plants looked like they'd been professionally mulched:) and grew like crazy this year. Oh, and the next day after putting it down, the squirrels had a blast doing their little "is it here, no, is it here, no, is it here", but a quick once over with a garden rake a few days after they'd finished their search and find routine, and all looks great again.

**Q: Gp2-14 vs gp2-18**
A: In "my" opinion the gp2-18 mesh is too small. I find the gp2-14 sufficient for my use.

**Q: Does SE make larger sifters? 3/4" 1" 11/2" or 2"?**
A: Sorry, they do not.

**Q: Where can I get data sheets with the exact opening size in microns or mm? I do not want an approximation by taking the advertised opening size.**
A: 1 Inch = 25400 Micrometers so 1/30" is 847 microns and one micron is equal to .001 millimeters. Or in other words, 1/30" is equal to .847 millimeters or just over 3/4 of a millimeter. Hope that helps. You can find a chart breakdown in a civil engineers work manual.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect

These are really nice pans. They are sturdy and get the dirt cleared away properly.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent riddle for sifting soil
*by on Reviewed in the United States April 1, 2026*

I use this riddle to sift soil. All packaged soil comes with a lot of trash in it. Rocks and sticks mostly, but other things too. I sift all my soil before using it for potting or seed starting and for a long time, I relied on the 1/4" size to do that.I purchased this riddle to deal with the ever-worsening quality of packaged soil products. I now have to sift twice. Once with this riddle then with the smaller one.The good thing is that I can use this riddle to sift my compost. The screen size is ideal for that.I like how this riddle fits over a 5-gallon bucket. That makes it very easy to use as it puts the sifted material in a bucket, ready to go. It is very durable and well made. It is easy to use, even when wearing gloves. For what you get, the cost is pretty good. I would say the value is there. There are higher-quality riddles out there that can process more material, but few that fit well on a bucket. For that, this is ideal.I recommend this.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for sifting top soil
*by on Reviewed in the United States May 11, 2014*

First, what I used them for and how they worked out:I purchased three of these. The 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 sizes. I used them from largest to smallest to break up the clumps of dirt and sift out all of the rocks and other things that were in the top spoil I had. If you are looking to do the same and only want to buy one, I'd recommend the 1/4 size. It is where the majority of the rocks I sifted were caught. The 1/2 didn't catch anything, though it did break up the dirt in preparation for the 1/4 size. The 1/8 size caught a lot of smaller rocks, but if the dirt you have is too moist, it soon becomes hard to push the dirt through the openings.Build quality:These are made of thick plastic and thick wire. They fit perfectly on 5 gallon buckets you would find at most home improvement stores. I was presently surprised since some reviews I read said the opposite. Will they withstand a 20 foot drop? Who knows. Already survived some 6 foot drops with no problem. Cleanup was pretty easy. I just hosed them down. The wire mesh is curved upward towards you and when pushed down on, the plastic lines you see in the picture of the item help support what you put in the item. Those seemed the weakest part of the item, but for what I was using it for it hasn't been an issue for me yet. Also, the space between the mesh and that plastic got lots of dirt stuck in it and was the hardest part to clean. There wasn't enough space for a finger so just use high pressure hose attachments and you should be fine.Overall, would buy again. I wish they were a little less expensive though. You don't have to buy all three like I did. Personally I think that going from largest to smallest made the sifting on the smallest size easier. However, as I said before, for sifting top soil, the 1/4 size is the size you want if you only want one.
