## Description

"Another winner from a top-tier thriller writer." --Kirkus Reviews Daniel Brasher left a high-paying job as a money manager to marry his community-organizer wife and do the work he loves, leading group counseling sessions with recently paroled ex-cons. Now he's about to start a private practice. But just before his last day on the job, Daniel finds an envelope in his department mailbox - one intended for someone else that was placed in his slot by accident. Inside it is an unsigned piece of paper, a note that says only "admit what you've done or you will bleed for it." along with a midnight deadline…which has passed. And the person to whom the envelope was addressed was found brutally murdered… "A fast-paced roller coaster ride…well-written and extremely realistic." --Criminal Element Soon, Daniel finds more warnings in his office mail, to people that the police cannot track down, and to victims that cannot be saved. Daniel's efforts, however, have alerted the killer to his involvement… and the next threat he receives is his own. Now, Daniel - with no clue what he's supposed to have done or to what action he must confess - must somehow appease, or outwit, a seemingly unstoppable killer. And time is running out… "Menace, treachery, and intrigue have never been more exciting." --The Washington Post

Review: Worth your time! - I have to say I found the book a little slow and redundant at times but overall a good read. Great buildup to a wild ride of an ending! Enjoy,!
Review: Few surprises, but still a good read. - Although I guessed where the story was headed, I still enjoyed the book. The group therapy sessions rang pretty true, and all but two of the characters in the book were interesting. The writing was good, and so were the fond memories the book brought to mind of San Francisco.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ FANTASTIC - MUST READ!

I have read all of Hurwitz' books and have loved every one of them, which is very unusual. Most authors have at least one so so novel, but not Hurwitz. Once again he creates a sympathetic protagonist who is in some ways pretty ordinary, but is then able to rise to extraordinary when the stakes are high enough. Daniel Brasher comes from a very privileged background but was raised by a critical and superficial mother. He is sympathetic to people who are struggling and works with convicts on parole to help them change their lives. He rejects his mother's values and life style. His wife shares his values and her job also makes a contribution to the underserved. They are good people and yet they are being targeted by a psychopathic killer. There are many twists and turns, suspense courses through every sentence as the story unfolds. Just when I though the story was winding down and we were moving to the epilogue, the most exciting part of the book happens. The unfolding and dealing with the bad guys is the main thrust of the book and is very compelling. I also loved the relationship he had with the people in his group and reading about how he handled situations with them. There was throughout the struggle of rejecting privilege and using it, being responsible about our carbon footprint (he drove a Smart Car) and living the life we want to live, and understanding that the choices we make have consequences. As with all his books, this one is well written, well developed and brought together without loose ends and unanswered questions.
