## Description

The novella that first propelled Dazai into the literary elite of post-war Japan. Essentially the start of Dazai's career, Schoolgirl gained notoriety for its ironic and inventive use of language. Now it illuminates the prevalent social structures of a lost time, as well as the struggle of the individual against them--a theme that occupied Dazai's life both personally and professionally. This new translation preserves the playful language of the original and offers the reader a new window into the mind of one of the greatest Japanese authors of the 20th century. A poignant glimpse into the mind of a Japanese schoolgirl. Osamu Dazai's Schoolgirl captures the fleeting thoughts and emotions of a young woman navigating the complexities of adolescence in post-war Japan. Through her introspective observations, the novella explores themes of identity, social expectations, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. Experience the world through the eyes of a perceptive schoolgirl as she grapples with self-doubt, societal pressures, and the desire for self-acceptance. This translation preserves the playful language of the original, offering a window into the mind of one of the greatest Japanese authors of the 20th century. Perfect for readers of literary fiction and those interested in Japanese culture and coming-of-age stories.

Review: good wulaity - good
Review: Fantastic short work - One of my favorites. Short but sweet. This is one of those books you will want to read in one sitting. It’s captivating but the stream of consciousness narrative can be challenging to put down and pick back up the next day. I think about this book all the time

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I feel like I may need to reread this
*by S***8 on December 7, 2021*

I got into reading a lot earlier this year. Mostly I think because I wanted some supplementary texts. I've been studying Japanese and I want to gain a greater knowledge of the good and bad of their society and how to they things. Perception which is shaped through culture, which is shaped through language should maybe give an idea of why I decided to read this. The idea of stream of conscience writing was new to me so I thought that was interesting. The story follows a schoolgirl on an average day for her. She lives in the country so she wakes up early and hops on a train, then after school returns home. It has a very nihilistic perspective on things (well the girl does) I feel I need to reread this one. It's a decent novella. I know the writer, Osamu Dazai was very nihilistic and eventually committed suicide. I feel like this story may even be a vulnerable one for him. At times it's like you're seeing things from his point of view, not the school girls.
