This bench power supply unit represents excellent value for money. 0-30 Volts with 5 Amp capacity for only £50 is amazing. The unit is compact and lightweight due to its use of switch-mode technology. It is supplied with two sets of leads: one set with 4mm banana plugs and crocodile clips for connecting the PSU to the load, and a set of test probes with insulated 4mm plugs, suitable for use with a digital multimeter.The front panel is simple - an on/off button that switches the mains input to the PSU (there is no output switch); a voltage control, which is multi-turn, allowing fine control of the output voltage; a current limit control, which is single turn and therefore not so easy to use; a 4-figure digital volt meter with 10 mV resolution; and a 4-figure digital ammeter with 1mA resolution. All very impressive for the price.As there is no output switch, the load must be disconnected to safely set the output voltage, and the output terminals must be short-circuited to set the current limit. Setting the voltage is easy with its multi-turn control and the displayed voltage agreed closely with my multimeter. Setting the current is fiddly as the control goes from 0 to 5 amps in three-quarters of a turn, and there is also a noticeable lag in its response.What lets this PSU down is that the current limiting action has a very slow response. See the accompanying video. In the video, I have set the PSU to output 12 volts and set its current limit to 0.2 amps. I then connect and disconnect a car tail lamp, which normally draws about 0.38 amps. Watch how long the PSU delivers 0.38 amps before the current is reduced to the 0.2 amp current limit value.
