Will it stand up to water color on top? Also what is the drying time? Thx!** A: The Platimum Carbon ink is very waterproof. I use it in my fountain pen for sketching and then do watercolor over it when dry.... no problem. It takes a reasonable time to dry. I really like this ink! Nice dark black, and yes, waterproof when dry. **Q: Is this genuine platinum carbon ink? It just seems too goodbfor the price since its $30 everywhere else.** A: I don’t know as this is my first bottle. But it is waterproof. I wanted it to use with watercolours and this ink is perfect. I haven’t purchased it from anywhere else. The packaging etc seemed genuine **Q: Does this ink feather? note: i'm using a stillman & birns alpha sketchbook, which is medium grain and meant for mixed media.** A: Although I have actually used this ink, in the past, I must say I did not experience any feathering. It most definitely depends on the type of paper you are using. Unfortunately, there are so many different types available you are going to have to experiment to a small degree.I remember utilizing this ink on watercolor paper, and because this ink is considered "waterproof", ( much more than a lot of other brands), I was able to lay in washes over and on top of the line work, not that long after it was "dry". A customer reported on a "Jet Pen " blog , that if you use thin ,untreated paper, you could expect feathering and bleedthrough. I happen to use Stillman and Birn Sketchbooks all the time, and love them, and the paper is great.One last note, everyone who ever uses this ink, makes a special note of warning fellow artists about making sure you don't let this ink clog whatever pen you are using.Cleaning the pen is of utmost importance.I would have remiss, had I not stated that. This is why you may need to clean your pens more often. It’s BLACKER, but since there are carbon particles it could build up. That does not stop professionals from using it. Platinum Carbon Black has a pencil like lustre to my eyes. This is a pigmented ink. These inks have their own set of troubles including the need for a thorough deep clean when there is a dried ink issue. However, this ink is easy to clean (as are sailor Kiwaguro and Seiboku, I will reserve judgement for Souboku). Also Platinum gets around this with their slip seal tech which is present on most of their pens (certainly their cheapest preppy, profounte and plaisir models ). If you are worried that you will forget about the ink and it will dry out, try a preppy. If you really forget about the pen, still, 2 weeks down the line you have a pen that writes when put to paper. If it is 2 months, you have a forgetful memory. If it is two years, you have way tooo many pens. Comparison to other black inks 1. Noodlers X-Feather. better water resistance on Platinum carbon Black, wetter and more lubricated, also a faster dry time and non-smudging off good paper. X-F is blacker, cheaper (per ml basis) and also 2. Herbin perle noire. PCB has Much better water resistance, slightly more lubricated. HPN is cheaper, slightly blacker and slightly wetter, and since it has no pretensions of water resistance, cleans off easier. 3. Schneider Black cartridges - PCB has much better water resistance, is a true black. Schneider has a purple undertone, is much cheaper, and is wetter. Overall, if using in a EF/F pen (especially something like a preppy) - this is a solid, reliable daily pen.
