It senses the subtile change in the inductance of its coils produced by the VERY slight change in density of a stud behind a sheet rock wall. The problem with finding rafters is that they are under decking, plus underlayment (probably tarpaper) and THEN the shingles. And neither the shingles nor the tarpaper are particularly uniform. Before this I drilled so many test holes to find a stud that I became expert at patching them. Since owning this I haven't drilled even one. Now for the ONE downside. It requires a full charge in the battery to the point you can't use rechargeables and it will stop working when the batteries are still good for everything else.
