Review: Good value and long life. - I've used this machine model 9960 since 2016. Actually bought 2. It comes with extension table. I broke feed dogs during early use, don't know what caused it. Straight stitch factory setting are too short so I adjust stitch length to longest setting everytime I sew. So I can't baste stitch on that setting, not long enough. Upper tension needs to be adjusted on the screen (XX) when using other than straight stitch and do test on scrap material just like you will sew. If you sew only a couple thickness of cotton on zig zag, it puckers because material is to thin, need to adjust tension. I had problems with jamming because I didn't have needle completely up position when threading and a used needle and may have been bent that I didn't notice. Once I rethreaded and put new needle in it ran fine. I love the speed control on the machine so I don't have to use foot pedal. Decorative stithes I can only make longer not wider. To get a far right straight stitch, just select the center option then go on screen and adjust "width" position as far to right as you want. You can also adjust left position more towards center if you like doing the width setting. The bobbin winding I've had trouble with as thread doesn't want to stay in the last threading part, thread needs to be held behind it when starting to keep tension to start. My only complaint is spool thread has to be put in so thread is under and when sewing, the thread hooks on the spool slit that holds thread when first bought. I end up cutting the spool to get rid of that slit in it. This isn't Singers fault that thread manufacturers do it this way. If it would have been on other end it wouldn't caught. Make sure you clean and oil machine regularly for smooth operation. I need to get a syringe with needle to reach parts in upper side case. My Singer oil bottle can't get into it far enough. I used an eye dropper but I don't have the precise control with it. I'm going to see if I can use twin needles as I do have the plate with a wide enough opening for them, it's just the upper thread I may have to use the bobbin winder holder for that then hand try 1st to see if it works. I read that hand thread each needle and have left needle thread behind that the loop and right needle thread in front of it. Loop is where needle inserts in machine. Have to watch positions of needle when sewing something than straight stitch center position so the don't hit presser foot and plate. Presser feet are easy to change execpt a couple that you need to remove the holder to screw on that special foot that had the shank built in it. Mine came with the basic feet plus a bag of a few other feet. The description says 600 stitches but I don't think that is how many unless they mean those that can be adjusted to different lengths and letters? I will have to check into that but there are plenty to choose from. I haven't tried embroidering with it. I would recommend if you do more than just basic sewing. Being digital may be a little too complicated for some people to understand and they should get one with knobs to adjust things. Has a good carrier case and you can take part of base off to use it for sleeves, pant legs or anything round. That I really love.
Review: Solid performer, very happy with purchase - I hadn't sewn for many years. I saw this on sale around Christmas time at a price I could not pass up. I've sewn a few small projects and am very happy with it. This machine has a solid feel to it and is loaded with features and accessories. I don't know what half of the sewing foots are used for so have some exploring to do. It's very quiet, smooth and handles many layers of fabric just fine. Stitch quality is good. I've played with the auto-tension and I think often the result of the stitch is a little better when the tension is increased just a tad over the automatic setting. I often test that on a sample before sewing. The thread cutter and auto needle down are must-have features now that I've used them. I've read some comments on the poor usability of the instruction manual. On the contrary, I found it to be easy to follow and not lacking at all. The machine is a little intimidating for those who have not purchased an electronic machine before, but I just opened the manual and followed it from page 1. Within half an hour I was on my way to sewing. The machine isn't perfect. A couple of things that don't work well are: 1) auto needle threader is hit and miss which is a real bummer, 2) a couple of the stitches seem to be not consistent/symmetrical. The latter is not a big deal as I probably will never use those. The included letter stitches were OK but nothing of monogram quality. It's fine for putting names on articles of clothing, bags, etc. I've never had a Singer in the past and was a little leery with some of the online discussions about their quality. The other machines I was considering were the Brother PC420 and SE400. Both were going for more than this at the time of my purchase and for the overall value, I decided to go with the 9960. Again, I have no regrets so far (And as a guilty pleasure, I just purchase the Brother SE400 to dabble in embroidery). The overwhelming positive (5-star) reviews is a testimony to the quality and usability of this machine. My prior machines were a Brother XL2021 (stopped working probably due to a bad foot pedal) and a Kenmore mechanical sewing machine which still works although it has an annoying habit of bunching up thread now and then. The Singer 9960 will now be my primary machine for sewing. I only wish I had more time to use it.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How well does the machine handle heavier fabrics (canvas, upholstery fabric, etc.) for home decor projects?**
A: I have had great results with the appropriate needle. This machine has been really good to me. I used a Jean needle to make a jelly roll rug and it turned out well. It was nice and flat, no waves. In 4 years, I have only broken one needle. I always do research and go slow when trying heavier fabrics.

**Q: I am fairly new at sewing and want to buy the best machine that will not be too complicated to use. Could this be the machine I am looking for. Reading very bad reviews. Please help**
A: If you have the time and patience to READ and try everything out one at a time, yes you will find this a very good investment. It cuts the thread when you are finished, it will thread the machine and the LED screen tells you when the needle is unthreaded and many other features. It has many (600) built in stitches and many different styles of buttonholes. I have been sewing for 60+ years and I love it, but then many of the features are not new to me. That is why I say time to read and patience to try all the different feet and stitches. If you just want to sit down and sew, this is not the machine for you.

**Q: Does this machine include a seam finisher in it's features? Maybe similiar to serging?**
A: Th 9960 has several stitces that sew a seam and overcast the edge at the same time. To complete the look of a serged seam you would need to attach the side-cutter. This attacment is not part o the standard accessories however and would need to be purchased separately.

**Q: What is the size of the throat for quilting?**
A: The latest answer from yesterday by "susan0624" is right on and I just finished a queen-sized quilt (108 x 108); it wouldn't have worked to do free motion with this size and all rolled up in the throat, but I used one of the fancy stitches along the seams and it worked out great; also, I think I pushed it to the limits with doing a queen-sized quilt on it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wonderful machine!
*by B***E on August 1, 2026*

I trust the singer name and this machine has excellent reviews for good reason. I've been using it about a month now and I love all the features. It comes with a large extension table as well as the ability to remove the smaller work table so that you can sew things such as sleeves. The included extra feet, including a walking foot, are also wonderful additions. The number of stitches including multiple options for buttonholes and for the machine to sew on buttons , are excellent. I think my favorite feature is the machines ability to cut both sides of the thread when you are done with a seam. My only complaint is that the insertion part of the power cord is stiff and long. It easily added more than 2 inches to the width of the machine. This extra width prevented the machine from being able to sit fully down into the cavity in my sewing table. I contacted the manufacturer to see if they have a 90° angle cord , but they do not. I ended up using the power cord from my old machine , which was not as bulky. I do not think the length of this part of the cord is included in the width measurement of the machine, so take that into consideration if you have a cavity type sewing table. Otherwise, an excellent machine.
