I had never used git before, but the situation arose where I needed to learn and use it. I was very confused and didn't know what I was doing, or why I was entering the few commands I had been told to use.Enter this book. It is SHORT and to the point. It provides CLEAR examples, followed by a brief explanation of why you did what you just did. All examples are presented via the CLI and GUI mode. I was only concerned with the latter, which shortened the book further.If you need a short and to the point book to pick up the basics of Git in a VERY short period of time, this is IT.

If you need to get up and running quickly with Git, this is the book for you.  After explaining in general terms the history, uses and variations of Version Control Systems like Git, the author pretty much holds your hand step by step to set up a local Git repository, set up a remote private repository using a free online service and how to use Git to collaborate with multiple programmers.This book will not give you a deep understanding of Git (there are other books available to do that) but it will give you enough information to get going in an easy and fun manner.  I highly recommend this book if you're completely new to Version Control Systems and Git.

If you're not familiar with using a version control system and you're primarily working on MS-Windows this book is for you (and deserves at least one extra star in that case). But if you have any experience or will be working on a UNIX based OS such as Linux or Mac OS X you'll probably find "Pro Git" more satisfying.
