About 7/8 of an inch long and 1/4 inch in diameter. **Q: Why do these contain only 200 iu of vitamin E?** A: Thank you for your question. Throughout the duration of both AREDS studies, patients received 400iu of synthetic Vitamin E. Synthetic Vitamin E is petroleum based as well as a less expensive form of the ingredient. Pro-Optic contains natural Vitamin E. Natural Vitamin E is plant based and 100% bioavailable whereas synthetic Vitamin E is only 50% bioavailable. That being said, only 200iu of natural Vitamin E is needed to meet the scientific equivalent of 400iu of synthetic Vitamin E. Natural Vitamin E is more expensive which is a reason a lot of manufacturers go with synthetic Vitamin E and it's lower cost. But we are not familiar with areds 4 formula. To date the National Eye Institute has completed two studies. They were AREDS (1997) and AREDS 2 (2013). From the results from both studies the NEI recommended a formula for AMD. The most recent was AREDS 2 which was completed in May of 2013. AREDS 2 is now the gold standard of eye care physicians to recommend to their patients with AMD. Going forward, there is no AREDS 4 formula and no plans by the NEI to start a new study.
