The description says it is unfinished but I tried to add Titebond wood glue for more support and the glue will not bond.** A: The wood is bamboo and is sanded to a smooth surface. As one reviewer noted, if you feel you need more support you might try wedging mall strips of masking or gaffers tape, folded sticky over so sticky sides stick together, where needed. My rack felt loose until there was the weight of wine bottles in it. Now if feels very sturdy. **Q: Will it hold Pinot Noir bottles?** A: Yes so far for every individual bottle. It's tight for some higher end pinot bottles that tend to have a wider base but holding the bottle exactly parallel to the ground you should be able to slide pretty much any bottle of pinot noir into any slot in each row expect for the first on either side. Once you get the fat part in through the second slot it can be moved over sideways to the first. The clearance is so marginal that I have to twist those tighter fitting bottles so that the label faces to the side and not up/down in order not to scrape the lable. Also only 2 of those substantial bottles can fit next to each other but if 3 bottles of that same size are placed next to each other the middle bottle rides over the two on each side. I interspace a thinner bottle between 2 thicker ones and that eliminate the problem for me. I would buy this rack directly from Decomil's site, unless you keep many bottles of the same high end label and have an excessive tendency to OCD. Don't buy it if not having all your wine bottles in prefect order upsets you or if you can't handle having to pull out a 2nd bottle to access a fat bottle that happens to be stuck in the first slot. **Q: Does this hold champagne bottles?** A: It depends on the champagne in question. As everyone does, I scoured amazon to find a decently sized wine rack at a good price. Once you start getting into the review section, things always get muddy, and decision making gets even harder. This seemed like a good product, so I decided to give it a shot. I have a modest wine collection, and I wanted something that looked nice, and would help me clean up the clutter. Shipping wasn't the fastest thing in the world, but it was free and didn't take too long. As soon as it arrived, I unpacked it and started to put it together. As others have said, it's very much like squared off lincoln logs for adults. Through the building process, I discovered that one of the side pieces was broken, which would affect the integrity of the rack, so I set it aside and kept building. All the other pieces were fine, and things went together very easily. Some of the pieces were joined more loosely than others, some tighter, but nothing problematic. Once I finished putting it together it seemed more stable than some others had noted in their reviews. I'm sure one things that helped is that my rack is sitting on hard flooring, and not on carpet. There were no wobbles or shakiness to the rack, and seemed very stable. I started filling the rack with my wine, and the more you put in, the more stable it got. A couple items of note to other buyers - first, pay attention when you're building the rack, while the sides are all the same, there is a difference between the from and back rails where the bottles sit. You don't want to get half way through putting it together only to realize that you need to start over. There seems to be some disagreements as to whether or not there are issues fitting larger sized bottles into this rack. For the record, there are some wine bottles that will not fit in the rack, and will probably need to be placed on the top row, or set aside and not use them in this rack. Out of my entire collection I had only 2 bottles that wouldn't fit, and they are slightly larger than normal wine bottles. We're not taking magnum champaign size, just larger bottles. Take that into account if you are looking at this rack, but otherwise this is a great product and well worth the price.
