    Hyper X Savage 480GB

*by D***T on Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2016*

The savage X is a pretty decent step up in the SSD spec and performance has been excellent in both synthetic benchmarks and in real world testing which has been my primary drive on a new W10 build, however I swapped it out to be the scratch on my MacBook and the performance increase in that function was HUGE. Any step up from platter drive to an SSD is a huge jump in itself - if you have not done that yet it’s time (well, two years ago was time but you are forgiven). The Hyper X Savage series is pushing what is capable from these drives and in a single drive we are getting close to what a four disk RAID platter system is capable of - assuming it isn’t bandwidth limited - in the space of something that for reference sake could fit in your wallet. The type of throughput your could get with a few of these SSD's in a RAID array is somewhat mind boggling and from a cost benefits perspective something that could really be considered on the application. It actually makes me take stock and remember a production company I was involved in who had a render farm essentially on rental but ran four disk RAIDs just so the drives were not a bottleneck (also this was back in the day apple used to charge a crazy amount just for the the internal raid controller!) Platter SSD’s are fast becoming a medium only for long term or asset storage. At least a single SSD can be used as scratch disk these days and be incredible for speed at least as a primary working disk. For day to day use I have used SSD’s for many years so the speed jump has become the norm i don’t even remember the ‘old days’. Somewhat like the the message of John Carpenters ‘In The Mouth Of Madness’ - if enough people believe it becomes reality. I think we are at that point now with SSD’s (minus the insanity + monsters and such from my film reference)Bench show using Blackmagic disk speed. This test is NOT scientific but it is meant to show the jump in performance I got with my OVERALL setup. The methodology and control parameters are wrong - I know, I'm a scientist - but I'm not benching for any other reason so show the increases I got in my use. That is what happens in the real world folks.Anyway The low speeds on the EVO 840 that I have had for two and a bit years. The drive has only 60GB free space but the numbers and more importantly in use - I could feel that slow down when doing video stuff. The scratch was either the internal or a 750GB WD Black platter which would top out at 90MB/s max on writes. Video was becoming a real chore. I swapped out the WD, Added the savage, then transferred about 150GB of data to it. Then I ran the tests on both drives and I was surprised to see that gap but I was even more surprised how much I noticed it when doing video. SSD's will degrade over time and the fact there was free space on the Savage means its going to get a better result - to compare them accurately the conditions should have been the same but I reiterate I just wanted to see the bump in performance I got in my SPECIFIC set up. Whilst testing speeds are about 50 /100MB/s below what it is advertised (depending on the program used I also benched it in windows), it is common place for drives to be advertised with often be a burst rate using the drives cache. I’m yet to actually ever see an SSD hit an advertised spec so I will take it for what it is although I wait for the day I’m surprised by these results. The SSD I used prior to this was a Samsung EVO 840 which is still displaying outstanding read performance in day to day use you can see the difference in the two graphs The S10 controller doesn’t suffer bottlenecks in regard to compressed write which should give a great advantage to tasks that require an intermediary conversion (eg. converting to something useable like pro res) I’m actually out of the loop on format compression / decompression since I don’t do anywhere near the amount of video I used to but the rub is its fast, and more than useable for my needs when I hit a bottleneck I will care, and thus look into it more. The EVO uses a sand force controller whereas the savage has moved on to a Phison S10. Frankly, the sandforce controllers have been fairly reliable and field tested whereas time will tell if the S10 is regarded with similar regard, although it has been in wild for a couple of years. In real world use I don’t think it will be as noticeable form the step up from a platter drive to an SSD BUT even in the synthetic benchmarks I threw at it showed a significant difference in write speeds vs the EVO 840 (although we are not testing apples + apples the Hyper X is 70% empty so it should be far ahead as stated) The drives itself is razor thin and comes with all the mounting hardware required to mount in a 3.5” slot assuming you have a drive tray. In my current build I had the option of a 2.5” slot and tested the fit on that also. Both were spot on and the 2.5 slot only required two screws in the side, whilst the 3.5 had all screws in the base drive. Cost? Tough one but your only looking about $50 max above the market cheapest base level 480-500GB SSD and your getting that back in performance I feel. I intended to get back into video and wanted something that could handle 2.7k stuff as a primary scratch which is as high as I will likely shoot. The Hyper X Fury drive are pretty good and I may have got away with one of those but I had terrible luck with two entry level Sandisk SSD’s that both bricked under moderate load so i decided i would pay for performance on this and I intend on thrashing it - so three years warranty looked pretty good to me. I think for the day to day user the Fury looks decent especially if you are upgrading from a platter as a day to day. The 480GB is the sweet spot for price / GB too the 960 is a bit high at present. Very nice, no complaints at all delivers a very quick drive and with zero issue or weirdness tried on both a mac and PC system.

With this drive my PC is WAY faster now!

*by D***0 on Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2016*

I'm impressed. This is my first SSD hard drive and it makes my PC run WAY faster! It boots up from hitting the power on switch to fully loaded and ready to go Windows desktop about three times faster than with the traditional hard drive.Large programs such as Photoshop, CAD, or Visual Studio load in just a couple of seconds. EVERYTHING loads and runs super fast. Web browsing is lightning fast, too.The installation is the same as with any SATA hard drive. Just connect the power and data cables, configure it in your BIOS, and you're good to go with loading your OS on it.Being smaller in width than a traditional desktop drive, you need an adapter to mount it in a desktop PC drive bay. The basic HyperX (just the drive without the bundle kit) that I got came with a nice metal bay adapter kit including screws. It's hidden on the bottom side of the foam packaging inside the box that the drive is packaged in.I didn't know it was included when I bought the drive so I had bought an adapter kit separately. But the one that came with the HyperX is much better. As noted by other reviewers, this drive is very attractive to look at. The case is well-constructed with sturdy, high quality materials. Some reviewers have had issues with cloning but I can't speak to that. I installed a fresh Windows OS from an OEM setup disk that came with my PC and it installed Win 7 Pro 64-bit completely in about 12 minutes with no problems at all. That was with the HyperX connected to a SATA 2 connector on my motherboard. Since then I spent about $20 on a PCI Express card to upgrade it to a SATA 3 connection for even faster performance. Even with SATA 2 the HyperX blows away traditional drives but with SATA 3 you get the maximum benefit.

Easy to install and works as advertised.

*by R***O on Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2015*

Works as advertised, well constructed , comes with a tray for desktops (smaller bay tray). Windows 10 was free so got this SSD and additional 4 GB to make the laptop last another 2 years (perhaps). Significant speed advantage for a Toshiba C55 series. The imaging software worked and cloned the WINDOWS 10 laptop and I could use this disk in about 1 hour. Previous HDD size was 500 GB , out of that I used around 1.1 GB . Acronis shrunk the partition and fitted everything into this 240GB HDD. For those of you wondering about disk size , you do not have to buy a same disk size or larger when you convert to SSD. Just make sure your SDD has enough space for what you currently have on your HDD and then some more for another 1-2 years of data. Anyway, most of the photos and music and documents now get stored on the cloud , be it Amazon or Google or Microsoft. In all a good purchase. Yes, another important point, you do have to have an external disk enclosure with USB to clone your present HDD.
