It's not for the prudish, the squeamish, or the pretentious. Rather, Bad Taste is a delightful, instructive, and inspirational movie-making workshop resource. It has great effects gags - including great sets, props, models, folly, and gore - all with EXTREMELY great editing, and all in service of a funny plot with a clever storyline and outrageous sequences.Bad Taste also has GREAT pacing. There are no boring or unnecessary lulls to pad time. The provisions of exposition and tone are just right, so as the story unfolds and elements are revealed, everything is easy to follow and makes sense in the context of the movie. It has set-ups, and the set-ups have pay-offs. It has fun and funny dialog, fun characters with clear motivations, and tons of action. The lighting, cinematography, directing, choreography, and locations all work well. Even beyond its over-the-top gags, there are also tons of great props, effects, shots, and edits so well crafted and executed that it isn't always apparent that they're not real stunts, objects, or actors being filmed in real locations. And again, it's all in service of what turns out to be a good storyline and a funny movie.For any fans of practical effects, gross-out comedy gags, and inspired creativity in the face of limited resources, Bad Taste is a must-see, and worth multiple viewings. Really, it's worth owning. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Shoestring foreshadowing of Peter Jackson's genius *by D***5 on Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2017* Whether or not you're a fan of the LOTR saga (but seriously, how could one not be?) this low budget Kiwi import circa 1980's is an hour and a half of varying flavors -none of them bad- that'll leave the viewer with an even greater admiration for Peter Jackson, or have one going to Amazon Prime in search of all of his subsequent films. Keep in mind that this was a collaboration among Jackson and friends that was filmed in the weekends over a period of years where everyone involved was multitasking; yet, the film is pure Jacksonian. Aside from writing and directing credits, Peter Jackson also was the Gandalf-prop wizard who constructed the alien prosthetics and the weaponry displayed throughout the movie. For a project that began in a mere $25,000 budget, Jackson 's tremendous artistic capabilities catapulted "Bad Taste" to a height well beyond the schlock horror subgenre in a way that is actually quite tasty for fans of several persuasions. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece *by M***B on Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2020* I discovered this gem after a fellow sci fi fan told me about it last year. It seems rather odd Bad Taste is the precursor to Jackson's more epic films. But close examination reveals Jackson's filmmaking genius even in his very first film. Made over four years during college for next to nothing, Jackson and his friends somehow crafted together this incredibly bizarre yet wildly entertaining masterpiece of student film. The sophomoric jokes, outrageous scenes, and how it pokes fun at itself and its genre make Bad Taste one of my favorite movies.
