This thing cost a bit, but it is very well made (in Japan, where they still take some pride in their workmanship), heavy gauge wire with thick insulation, and solidly built connectors. Driver must be loaded from Yamaha website. This is pretty easy, but read the (small) print in instructions carefully and note that the device must be plugged into USB port on PC BEFORE installing the driver. Also, if you have never used one of these before, remember that the OUT lead must be plugged into the IN port and the IN lead must be plugged into the OUT port on synth. Review: Does NOT work with Mac. - I didn't get the chance to use it since it doesn't work with Mac. The installation software takes you to the Yamaha website or file download. **Q: This is a technical question. Is this a class-compliant USB MIDI device ?** A: It is not class compliant. Most USB MIDI adapters are class-complaint and need no driver, but the UX16 requires a driver, and a reboot after installing the driver, before it can be used with OS X. That being said, I see many accounts in reviews of the UX16 that it works properly when other (presumably class-complaint) adapters don't. **Q: Had some problems with a cheaper cord. Will this work with MacBookPro/garageband?** A: This midi interface works fine with my old MacBook (2008 with snow leopard) and a Yamaha PSR620 keyboard. You will need to download the driver from the Yamaha website though. The disk that comes with the cable is not readable by a Mac. **Q: Can I use this cable connected to a converter connected to my ipad and get my musical keyboard to talk to my ipad.** A: Honestly, I don't know what that converter you mention is all about, but it does not sound possible to me. I know about MIDI solutions for iPhone and iPad which work really well. I bought an IK Multimedia iRig MIDI for my iPhone 4 and I am very happy with it (there is a new version supporting the lightining connector for iPhone 5, etc.). I am using the Windows 10 (64 bit version) As which software to use with it, most people say Sibelius First, Finale, but in my humble opinion the most accurate recording and notation software is Forte 6. The MIDI OUT of the piano, connects with the MIDI IN (UX16 cable) that goes to the computer and the MIDI IN (piano) with MIDI OUT (UX16 cable). It will create a small icon on your Windows Control Panel, where you have an option to send a note to the piano to test it.
