Matter of fact: I could not get it to work when this was connected directly to my laptop. ..After alot of investigation and stumbling... I found a very small blurb mentioning usb hub (2.0)... Connected an old usb 1 to 4 and Connected this to 1 of the 4 usb2.0 jack's and viola!! It work's!! [ A Flawless-Victory ] **Q: I have a windows 10 hp spectre and this device will not connect. the light stays red. any suggestions?** A: Make sure you're connecting using a 2.0 USB port on your HP Spectre laptop. The device is not recognized if plugged into a 3.0 USB drive. I had the same problem on my Dell, luckily it's got 2x3.0 USB ports and 1x2.0... The company that makes this device doesn't make that clear on the packaging or super obvious on their website (though I did find that answer there). I tried installing their drivers - WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE btw. For me, plugged into the 2.0 USB port and Windows 10 recognized the device and got a Green Light on the device. I went to this site https://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP and downloaded the latest driver available on both of my computers (Windows 10 64 bit and an older Acer laptop with Windows 7 64 bit) Once the driver was installed, the EX adapter worked as it should. When the repair shop is charging over $200/hour labor, this pays for itself in one application and diagnoses. This scanner works with my Dell laptop and provides way more information when paired with the FORScan App. Not only does it read and modify codes but reports on things that do not trip your Check Engine Light. My 1998 Lincoln Town Car was experiencing a slight misfire that I could feel but it never gave a Warning light. By going into Mode 6 of the App, it identified which cylinder was the problem. It also allows you to change the factory settings, reprogram remotes, and monitor everything from brakes to your A/C compressor. This scanner when paired to the App gives you as much information as the scanner your dealer uses for a whole lot less time, and money.
