The leather is soft, pebbled, and very light weight. The interior is classic Kate - whimsical pattern that is light enough you can see what you are looking for. I would describe this bag as mid-large sized (which is how I like my bags). My full sized checkbook wallet, cosmetics case, keys, and misc. accouterments sit side by side on the bottom (I could probably add my full sized iPad or kindle with no problem; however, they are tall enough that the bag wouldn't "slouch" like a hobo should). I do have two areas where the bag could be improved for my needs - I wish the short handle were just an inch or two longer; it would sit on my shoulder that way (right now doing this places the bag right under my armpit and could never be done if I were wearing a coat). I also wish that the long strap provided a few more holes so I could make it shorter; the shortest length is still a bit too long for a "shoulder bag" (and I'm 5'7" with a long torso); if I could do this I wouldn't care that the top handle is strictly for carrying by hand.
