There's complaint in other review about strong chemical smell but if there is (which I don't remember there being any when I was unpackaging the product), it does disappear over time. You would think that they would have left the holes you see in the picture open so that the sponge could air out and breath after you use it, but nope. That compartment is fully encased. This also means that water accumulates on the bottom of where the sponge sits, and if you don't empty it and clean it from time to time it can get nasty. With that said, the soap dispenser is great, and overall I like the look of this product. It is well made, and does it's job.
