No idea how or why that happened, but for my purposes it doesn't matter, and I actually prefer the black version for the intended location. I use box fans in my home to improve air flow, air filtering (with a 20x20x1 filter attached) and white noise. I keep a couple running at all times. I have purchased numerous $20-$25 box fans from a large local retailer (I believe Lasko is the prominent brand). This is so much better. I purchased one of these a while ago and liked it so much that I went with this fan again. The legs / stands are robust and the airflow is substantially better with these. Which, that also means they are noisier than the standard, cheap-o $20 box fans. If you want a completely silent fan, then you probably should look for something else if you're looking to move air. If you want a much-better version of a box fan you can pick up locally, this could be a great option. If you want something that moves even more air, get something like this AIr King (B0007Q3RMA) -- though that is even louder, but much more powerful than this. This does run $10-$20 more than box fans I can get locally if buying new, but the extra price so far has been justified.
