They're rather slim and 6.5 in wide. You can install with out it but it won't sound very good and probably blow the tweeters quickly....and unrelated to your question. I bought these and the Renegade RX6.2C for about the same price. But the Pyle tweeters blew writhing 2 weeks. ( I am running a amplified system) but I'm only pushing about 35-40 watts rms per door. The renegade are still in and working fine. However the Pyle sounded lounder for a while.
