The optical signal is recovered as an electrical signal by using a photodetector and amplifier. The copper cable which is co-located with the fiber optic cable is used to provide DC power to the Quest 2. I bought a cheaper, so called "USB C" cable that was claimed to support 5 Gbps but, as tested with my Meta Quest 2 and a gaming PC, could only support 368 Mbps data transfers. I am returning the cheaper cable to Amazon.
