Good idea that is nevertheless overpriced, and hampered by numerous design flaws

*by N***L on Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2015*

Update, 10/26/16: When I purchased this clock, the selling price was almost $90; as of the current time, the price has been cut nearly in half. Assuming there have been no design changes since I wrote my review, the issues I detail below are still valid reasons why the clock may not be a good purchase for some people, regardless of price. However, much of my dissatisfaction stemmed from the fact the flaws were present in a $90 clock. At $45, they do seem somewhat easier to accept, although I would still personally not buy the clock.Original review:The pros of this clock are plainly visible to the casual eye: it shows the day, time, month, date and year, fully spelled out, in easy-to-read, highly legible font. If you are buying this clock specifically for someone with cognitive impairment, who can benefit from these features, this clock is worth considering, although the premium price might justifiably cause you to think twice. The cons, on the other hand, are not evident until you actually buy the clock and try to use it. Some of these might be considered design flaws, whereas others are inaccuracies in the manufacturer's description. Either have the potential to keep it from being a great, all-around clock for us "regular" folks who might be looking for something beyond utilitarian function. The pictures of this product show a nice, minimalist screen and case design. What they don't show is the AC adapter cord sticking out the side, at a 90-degree angle. The power input is near the edge of the unit, and the connector on the cord is straight, rather than L-shaped. An L-shaped connector would have allowed the cord to remain unseen behind the edge of the clock face; a straight connector means the cord sticks out beyond the edge of the unit, and is unavoidably visible. This is, frankly, a boneheaded oversight by the manufacturer that could have been easily avoided. Worse yet, the manufacturer is evidently intent on not letting you know about it in advance of purchase, given that none of the product pictures show the power cord, despite the fact the clock cannot operate without the cord attached. The description says the display is LED, and the pictures show white letters and numbers against a jet-black background. In reality, the display is a backlit LCD screen, much like a laptop monitor. I'm not sure what the source of the backlight is; it could be LED, but it could also be fluorescent. Either way, the display is subject to problems inherent in LCD screens. When viewed from any angle other than directly head on, the light bleeds through the black background, causing it to look slightly grey, rather than pure black. The display is still plenty legible, but it suffers aesthetically. Essentially, it looks like a tablet computer with a basic clock screensaver. That's fine in terms of function, but it looks pretty generic, and not like an intrinsically interesting clock design. The controls are awkwardly placed on the back of the unit, and they can be tricky to adjust while looking at the front. Moreover, the buttons are labeled only with abstract symbols. To understand how they work, you must consult the instructions. Their lack of intuitiveness is not helped by the fact that they are directly adjacent to the power cord input, such that the cord interferes with my ability to use the controls, requiring that I place my hand in an awkward position to manipulate them. Again, poor design and foresight. The display auto-dims at 7:00 PM, and goes to normal brightness at 7:00 AM. There is no light sensor on the clock, so it is not able to adjust depending on how much light is in the room. Also, there is no manual brightness setting, and there is no way to alter or override the auto-dim feature. The standard brightness setting is VERY bright. You won't have any problem reading this in a brightly lit room. The lower brightness is still light enough to function as a night light in the dark. If you're intending to use this as a bedside clock, and are bothered by light when trying to sleep, the brightness could be a problem. One potential solution to this issue is the ability to power off the unit while it continues to keep time. Of course, this means you will have to power it on before being able to see the time again, which eliminates the ability to see the time at a glance upon waking. Also, the startup screen comes on at full brightness, regardless of the time, so if you power it up in complete darkness, your eyes will be assaulted for several seconds before the time shows. (It's a minor point, but I can't help noticing the startup screen displays a website address that goes to a non-operational website. Nice move, guys.)Most annoyingly (at least for me) is that there is no way to set the seconds. It's not just that the instructions fail to explain how to set them. As far as I can tell, the seconds literally cannot be set. Nothing I have tried - from adjusting the minutes at an exact time, to exiting the adjustment menu - allows the seconds to be set with precision. The minute just changes when it changes. If you're not a stickler for exact time, this probably won't bother you, but if you like an exact time setting, this could be a deal breaker. On the whole, this clock isn't bad. It is functional, and will be of help to some people who can benefit from its features. That said, it has a utilitarian feel to it, and doesn't really look right sitting on my night stand. (I still have a few decades to go before the retirement home, and my decor reflects that.) Moreover, I fail to see how it justifies a price of almost $90. It doesn't feel particularly well made, and there are too many flaws and shortcomings in its design. This isn't taking into account the fact that mine came with blemishes on the screen that looked like someone had written on it with a permanent-ink marker, indicating quality control at the factory might also be a problem. I returned the unit, and did not seek a replacement.

Good for a year, then it fails. Forget trying to contact their non-existent customer support.

*by A***E on Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2017*

The display showing the day, date, and time are all acceptable, which is the main reason I purchased this product. However, after a little over a year of use the product just went blank. Note this is just outside the 1-year warranty period.I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it displayed the day, date, and time acceptably as before. Then later in the day it was blank again. Each time I unplugged it and plugged it back in the product worked OK for a few hours and then went blank again.I contacted customer service on their website and submitted a question asking whether there was anything I could do to correct the problem. I received no response. Not even an auto-response saying that my submission was received. Nothing. Just totally ignored. So after a few more submissions and no response I called the customer support number provided with the documentation. I was connected to an automated voice system that re-routed me to another automated voice system where I was asked to leave a message and they would call me back. I did leave a message, and I never received any call back. Still waiting after several months. This product is priced too high for something that lasts only a year and is not supported.

    Very clear display.

*by S***X on Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2018*

I got this for my mom, who can no longer keep the day in her mind for more than a few seconds. She used to fumble for the newspaper to find the date, but now she just needs to look up at this display and she instantly has it. Scarcely a day goes by where she doesn't mentioned to me how much she likes it. The display is remarkably clear. I was surprised that it looks almost exactly like the picture in the advertisement. I believe it's an active color display, but it only uses black-and-white. The contrast is excellent, and the display can be viewed easily from across the room in normal room light. .On the downside, the set up menu is not particularly intuitive, and I have to fumble with it to get it set correctly (and of course it's tethered by its power cord, so I can't hold it in my lap). And related to that is the fact that the time drifts by about a minute every couple weeks or so, and I have to keep resetting it to make sure the time is correct. But overall it works very well for my mom's needs.
