I expected to hear this thing going off every 5 minutes for the rest of my life but after a short time the animals mostly learned to stay away. My poor dog who is terrorized by the cat is absolutely terrified of this device, I think because it sounds like the cat hissing. Overall I am very pleased with this item and have seen great results. I have not had the experience of having it go off all the time so needing the canister replaced often as some other reviews have mentioned, probably because the area affected is in a corner behind my dining table and people are not walking around back there all the time. I lost sleep at night because I thought I could hear him pulling the carpet and even then it would too late. I bought a few of these devices and they worked WONDERS. They don't work well at night but all it took was for my cat to pass by and get sprayed by the air compressor a time or two and he never tried again. If he finds another spot I just put in another device and remove it/turn it off if it's in a public area and I have company over. Anyone know if this might scare the skunk away?** A: If you don't have other animals that you do not want to scare away, get pepper stuff to keep it away. look for stuff that keeps cats out of a yard. I am pretty sure it would work with a skunk, too. You scatter it around. For cats have to put it around every few months, but skunk might just learn to go elsewhere **Q: Refills are expensive, how long does one last? If it scares the cats away now and then..** A: It depends. Not long in my opinion. Especially if you are walking by and forget you have it turned on and it keeps going off. My cat gets on the counter when I am there so I like to have it turned on. This did not help our cat on the counter problem. **Q: top won't attach , what am I doing wrong?** A: The top has a piece that needs to be pulled down onto a can. You place the can on the table, put the top piece on the can, then pull the small ring down over the can. Do not force the can into the lid, or you can break both the deterrent as well as damage the can. Put it together per instructions Put batteries in, no action except when installing the top on the bottle. Cats walked around it no action, every once in awhile it would just go off with nothing around it, examined it moved it across objects changed batteries, still nothing. Called the company that supplied it, got telephone number of maker. I called and explained the problem, good customer service, immediately shipped me another, received it, same problem $40 is pretty expensive for this item especially after Finding that they don’t work. Not sure what is wrong it is very simple as per the limited instructions to set up. Just does not work. After speaking to a company rep and explaining the problem again, was treated nicely by the lady, who then ordered me another set. It arrived yesterday and put it together, and it works sporadically, I don’t know if it’s the sensor or the switch. I put it together very carefully and don’t know what you could do differently. Still works every once in a while which is better than the others that didn’t work at all.
