Back then flashlights used incandescent bulbs and needed large power sources--hence 2 or more D cell batteries. In those days if you wanted a sturdy flashlight with a focusing beam you got a Maglite--no other product came close to their quality. Unfortunately, Maglite has done a poor job of adjusting to the LED revolution. Their first generation LED products had major quality concerns, but I had hoped this second generation LED flashlight would be reliable. However, my flashlight failed suddenly after only a couple hours of use. I read the warranty only to find that I would need to send the product at my expense with a $15 check and that the LED was not covered at all. This is what the Maglite corporation calls an "industry leading limited lifetime warranty." Other than the LED, their isn't much on this flashlight that is likely to fail--it is basically a metal tube, a switch, an LED, and a lens cap, so obviously the warranty is useless. Moreover, the LED isn't even a replaceable part, so after only 2 hours of use I am left with a paperweight; the old incandescent models had a spare bulb in the end cap so you were never left in the dark for long. LEDs are typically rated to last 30,000 hours or more so there is no excuse for them not to be covered by a warranty. Apparently this particular product is already being phased out, and it is easy to see why. Even when it was working it produced only ~270 lumens of light, which placed it near the back of the pack for 21st century flashlights, many of which can be had for a much lower price. The focusing feature did work quite well, so I will give it two stars, but I need a flashlight that is going to be reliable in case I am using it in an emergency. I am a security guard and I have to use a flashlight every night for work, this is my essential tool. I had temporarily used a cheap dollar store LED flashlight with expected results (it was good for $1) but there was no way this was gonna do me for my job. I researched carefully and the MagLite LED 2D Pro came up as the best choice for what I was looking for. My expectations for this product have been exceeded greatly! It is better than the handheld spotlight they sometimes give you for security positions! It is extremely bright for how light it is as a 2-Cell. This is an incredible product.This flashlight is the best I have ever had and better than any MagLite I have ever used. As with most people who purchased this, I was drawn to the high lumen value and battery life.As with any Mag light, the construction feels solid, the finish is excellent and the 2D size is perfect, button action is great, and brightness was awesome.However, after roughly 7 months of extremely lite use (I'd say I clocked about 4 hours of total use, with power outages this past winter in New England) the LED started to emit a brightness of about 100 lumens. I determined this by comparing it side-by-side with by Defiant LED flashlight (Model # HD12OTB14), Absolutely terrible.Flashlight aside, the deal breaker, as with any company, is their customer service. The warranty info is here:https://maglite.com/support/warrantyIt's a one year warranty. The problem is that the customer is responsible for the round trip shipping, which the cheapest it would be is $24 via the USPS. UPS would be more. So now I'm more than 3/4 of the way to just buying a new one. So rather than paying and waiting for the snail mail and the Mag Instrument techs to repair it, I'll simply be keeping it as a dust collector and buying a Cree or another Defiant. I'm 31 years old, I'll likely buy at least 8 more flashlights in my life, (two every ten years until 70) unfortunately none of them will be Mag lights.Customer service can sway much bigger decisions. Bad experience with GE over a couple hundred dollars on a dishwasher, spend $3,500 on LG appliances instead next time around (true story). I don't get why companies don't remedy defects customers run into.
