    A very irritating read

Parekh writes exceptionally dull prose but that would not matter if he explored multiculturalism in a more scholarly manner. He fails to deal consider comparative law, the evolution of societies but worst of all, the problem of immigrants leaving a failed society bringing that failed culture to their new home. First of all, evolution: when two cultures merge in one society, you might expect some sort of synthesis to produce a new and better society. Parekh apparently would like the two cultures somehow to retain their differences yet live together, a soft tower of Babel. He shows disrespect for scholarship in science, philosophy and history. Rather than advance man's knowledge of the laws of nature, he would prefer schools (not parents) to teach his version of multiculturalism. Obviously there are challenges today for Quebecois in Canada, Aboriginals in Australasia, Native American Indians, blacks in the US, Muslims in India but apparently not Hindus in Pakistan. Nor is he concerned by Christians in Egypt. The treatment by the French of the Hijab really bothers him. Covering the face is just the same as wearing a cross. Early on he mentioned that he had been discriminated against and I felt that his book was inspired by this racism.
