Apply steady pressure to unscrew, both towards the water heater and counter clockwise. Make sure old gaskets came out with the elements. Do not overtighten the elements.... check for leaks afterward in case you need to tighten a little more. I turned of the power switch and the breaker to the water heater, started the disassembly after a lot of unwrapping, I was to the inside, after a lot of pictures for reference, I pulled out the elements, which were broken into several chucks.
