A beautiful finish and a nice mellow sound, not quite as bright as a spruce top guitar but it is beautiful sounding. One reviewer mentioned that the original shipping box from Yamaha was badly torn, mine was also and I thought the guitar was damaged but when I took it out and looked at it there was not a scratch on it. I am amazed that that guitar was not damaged the way the box looked. My guitar came from cream City music in Wisconsin, they inspected the guitar and did a player set up on it before they shipped it. All that being said, this is not just a beginner's guitar this is for an intermediate guitar player. It has a warm tone and is not as loud as my Yamaha FGX5 Red label, which makes it perfect for late night practices. After spending $15 on new bones and working the frets smooths, it stacks up against guitars 4 times the price. The FG850 is what you would expect from a company with factories all over the world.
