The drive can not be powered by USB alone. It should offer enough power to charge external drives while plugged into a 120v outlet with the included DC adapter. **Q: Can i hook up 2 different windows machines and can they both (for back up) accessed? as in running 2 different backups at different times** A: +derkalakader. This unit plugs into a USB port on your computer. The two ports on the front of the unit gives you back that port you used, plus one extra. Very handy on a laptop that only has one or two to start with.But to use it on two different computers, you need to do it on the network or just unplug it from one and plug it into the other. Or others. 4TB is a lot of room. I have 4 different laptops backed up on one 500 GIG. drive. But then I have another one that is used for Karaoke, and it uses a 500Gig. drive for back up all by itself. This drive is designed for a "Write one; Read many" workload. As long as your host device can have good networked speeds of 50Mb/s (50 Mega BITS) per stream you should be more then fine. The biggest impact on performance is if you need to encode/re-encode the video files.
