The material is a very lightweight wood, similar to balsa, stained in the color selected at purchase. I did encounter a minor quality control issue: several boards were stained on only three of the four edges. While this was not a significant problem, it is worth noting. I ordered seven units, all of which arrived in good condition with no damage. Assembly is straightforward, though using a power drill is highly recommended. Care should be taken not to apply excessive torque, as the boards can split. Once installed with my own metal drywall anchors, the shelves had no trouble supporting multiple winter coats, small items in the drawers, and medium-to-lightweight items on top. The listed dimensions on the website are accurate. The included hardware is of acceptable quality, with the exception of the provided drywall anchors, which are made of very cheap plastic.
