My son needs this for college.** A: it means that you can actually program a function or a formula on to the calculator, my personally would not recommend the ti89 titanium calculator until you son is taking calc III, due to the fact that is no useful in calc I and II, because that's only dealing with 2 variable functions, I have it and didn't get fully usage until I taking calc III and general physics.
