There isa definate sound to indicate that the gun is functioning. **Q: Would my 5 and 6 year old sons be able to use this well?** A: I bought it for my grandson who is 9 years old for Christmas......It is a pretty large size gun....May be little too big for a child 5 or 6 years old. **Q: How heavy is it? What kind of batteries do you need?** A: The weight is noticeable, but after carrying this thing for over three hours in a college-campus-wide Humans vs Zombies war, I can say that it's rather lightweight compared to other blasters so long as you keep the stock braced against your shoulder.
