This item helps contains those platers so they don't make a mess of the inside of the microwave. But it does take some practice to use them for example often they end up with a steam and splater on the inside of the cover rather then on the microwave ofen itself. But that means when you go to remove the cover from the food to take it out of the microwave it can have a fair amount of splater and moisture inside it. I find that I need to use a dishtowel to catch that potential runoff when removing the cover from the microwave itself otherwise you can have have the water from the steam collected in the cover all over the bottom of the microwave or running down the front of the microwave. With some care and learning how to use the and remove them from the microwave they still do a better job than have the mess that can result from splaters that are not covered and are still easier to clean up than cooking without them.
