This paperback edition, highly rated by readers and ranked among the top Asian literature titles, offers a timeless narrative that blends melancholy with subtle joy and cultural depth. ## Description An NYRB Classics Original A humble clerk and his loving wife scrape out a quiet existence on the margins of Tokyo. Resigned, following years of exile and misfortune, to the bitter consequences of having married without their families' consent, and unable to have children of their own, Sōsuke and Oyone find the delicate equilibrium of their household upset by a new obligation to meet the educational expenses of Sōsuke's brash younger brother. While an unlikely new friendship appears to offer a way out of this bind, it also soon threatens to dredge up a past that could once again force them to flee the capital. Desperate and torn, Sōsuke finally resolves to travel to a remote Zen mountain monastery to see if perhaps there, through meditation, he can find a way out of his predicament. This moving and deceptively simple story, a melancholy tale shot through with glimmers of joy, beauty, and gentle wit, is an understated masterpiece by one of Japan's greatest writers. At the end of his life, Natsume Sōseki declared The Gate, originally published in 1910, to be his favorite among all his novels. This new translation captures the oblique grace of the original while correcting numerous errors and omissions that marred the first English version. Japanese themselves see Soseki as one of their greatest authors; certainly the one best able to convey late 19th, early 20th century Japanese sensibilities. If you want to better understand how and why Japan is different from North America or Europe, even though superficially it might seem similar, then this is a must-read book. Please give it time, your patience with what may seem a slow-moving story, and you will be amply rewarded. It can become one of those stories you enjoy returning to many times, even when you "know the story". --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.at/products/282204060-frances-lincoln-the-gate](https://www.desertcart.at/products/282204060-frances-lincoln-the-gate) --- *Product available on Desertcart Austria* *Store origin: AT* *Last updated: 2026-10-11*
