That is, you should be able to push down on it, but it is useless for pulling yourself up in the circumstance, like a couch, in which the top of the level upon which you reside is much lower than the top of the device. In this latter circumstance a trekking pole is better. I suppose the "Easy Get-Up Chair Support" would be better than the trekking pole in the get-out-of-bed circumstance, because it would be hard to store the trekking pole near the bed in an upright position (it would usually fall over). Also, it would be much easier for an invalid to seek the top of the EGUCS than to grab a trekking pole even if the trekking pole were positioned vertically (say by a nurse) and close to the bed. This brings up another advantage of the EGUCS. You would not necessarily need a nurse to position it. The nurse needs only to position it one time, that is when the invalid first gets into bed. Also most users of the EGUCS could position it themselves to use when they later get out of bed. **Q: What is the weight capacity?** A: I dont know. 300 or 400 lbs. It works very well. **Q: Does the item come assembled? I'd like to take it with me via airplane as the person who needs it doesn't live in the US.** A: No, it does not come assembled. It comes in flat box approximately 36 x 12 inches. Easy to transport. **Q: are there any detailed instructions showing how to put this together?** A: Instructions were included but this chair support only works as a very light helper in getting up. I started looking for a device to help me stand, but they all seemed to have drawbacks: they needed to go under cushions (my couch cushions are attached), or would take up too much room, or might get stuck on my hips! (I am wide and fat, lol!). This can be placed precisely in any position that makes you feel safest. It can easily be moved from room to room; I use it as a sort of cane at times, to get in and out of bed, for security when I have to remain standing for a few minutes (eg, putting away clothes). At first I was frustrated with it bc I kept pulling it towards myself, and it would tip and be useless. The trick is to push down, as you would with a crutch, and then your own weight stabilizes it. It feels SO sturdy when I do this. I appreciate that the base on one side is open; sometimes you need to position your foot in that area.
