Never tried it with my macaw because it is too close to the wall for her wings to fit but I think a macaw could tip it over. I would guess a chunky Congo African Grey is about the limit of bird that could fly onto it rather than being placed. **Q: Is this one piece or is the scale and perch separate?** A: This scale is in two pieces. The wood perch comes attached to the flat light colored base which fits nicely on the black base and comes apart for storing easily. Although it fits together with pegs on the perch base it is quite secure and my Amazon likes it and it does not tip or wobble when she walks on it. An excellent item every bird care taker should have. **Q: What ia the maximum weight on this scale?** A: I just leaned on it and it went to 12 pounds, but it may not be accurate. My 1000 g Flame Macaw is weighed on it everyday. **Q: Could this be used to weigh birds of prey?** A: It’s good for birds up to around 5lbs or 2 kilos. The wood is a bit soft so I’m not sure if their talons would shred through it. I sadly bought this too late for my baby macaw because she began to lose significant amount of weight and sadly she didn’t survive. The doctor and the breeder did everything they could but I feel if I had this before I would have caught it sooner that she was losing weight. So I purchased this for my cockatoo to record and check his weight daily. Yes the birds are scared of it at first but with positive reinforcement he actually steps up on it now. But if your wondering if you should buy this or the “cheaper” version of another don’t think just buy this one. That is why my Aviary vet said I should get a scale ( she was very impressed with the professional product I brought in to show her if it was OK ) to monitor her weight as we are going to try and make her more actIve because one will not know if she has gotten enough food.
