I realize it requires an outside outlet. Anyone tried?** A: The tester can be used outside where no outlet is available--using the actual earth/the ground under your feet/soil/dirt. I do not know why this is not mentioned in the instructions. Think about it like this....where does your electrical outlet get its "ground" in the first place? Somewhere along your electrical box is grounded into the earth somewhere. Dirt works just fine without using the grounded hole in your outlet. (Remember to test your electrical outlet for proper grounding first.) Again, no electrical outlet outside-no problem, as long as you can reach some soil/dirt/ground somewhere. Just stick (or plug) the end that would normally go into the grounded hole of the electrical outlet into the dirt/soil/earth-it will be grounded. I found that my sidewalk and driveway are only grounded when wet but the garage floor has a good ground regardless. Both areas tested using my hand as the test subject to see if I was "grounded" while standing barefoot on each surface. I also tested my mats using the grounded outlet indoors and again with the ground end in the actual soil outside...both gave the same results. Grounded. I also added a piece of copper wire all the way around one of my sandals but not the other. Then lifted each foot to see the results. The copper wire worked to ground me, and my kid wearing tennis shoes while we held hands-as long as the shoe with the copper wire was on the ground...or in this case, standing on the grass. **Q: why is it that when I hold the metal tip of and put the square part on my skin it says I'm grounded, no matter where I am or touching the mat or not?** A: If you hold the tip and also put the connector on your body you are creating a continuous circuit - therefore you are testing positive for continuity. **Q: When i stick the grounding cord in the ground / earth, i want to keep it clean. can i wrap the end in aluminum foil before i stick it in the ground?** A: Yes. Since I discovered the whole science of grounding, it is part of my daily routine. I own two different grounding mats. I have a long one that is always on my bed and a smaller one that I use when I’m either sitting to watch TV, use a computer or just read a book. Wherever I find myself in my home grounding, I have this meter nearby and check it occasionally. In order for this meter to work correctly it is important that not only for you steadily press the button in the front but one of your fingers must be making contact with the metal disc on the back. (See photos). Then and only then will you get an accurate reading. In order to make sure you are grounded you must keep the front button pressed down for a few seconds while simultaneously touching the metal disc on the back. If the green light stays on while you are doing this, it is telling you that are you are grounded. I swear by this little meter so for anyone who is writing a review saying it does not work, they must be A) not using it correctly or B) using a mat that is not correctly grounded or C) using the mat or meter plug in an outlet that is not properly grounded. Believe me, it is not this meter. I have tested it both indoors and outdoors, and I’ve never had problems with it. The only time it will show that I’m not grounded is when I am actually not grounded, maybe because of the mat or I do not have enough contact between my body and the mat. If you are new to grounding and need a meter, this is the one I recommend. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I am able to test the grounding products AND I made it portable! :) *by on Reviewed in the United States August 24, 2023* When I first read the instructions, I thought, “Ok, I can test my mats,” and they were grounded, as I expected. But I wanted to do the tests outside, the way the “Earthing” author did: proving he was grounded, proving his buddy was NOT—but when his buddy took hold of the author’s arm, he also became grounded, even though he had shoes on! First, I stuck the end of the cord in the dirt, and could not get it to do anything. Maybe I gave up too quickly, but I thought I needed something longer, and I also had some copper wire that I use for crafts. I wrapped that wire around a spare Allen wrench (who doesn’t have extras of those, lying around!), and “strapped” the metal end of the cord to it. Then I stuck this in the garden dirt, and pushed the button on the meter—I was grounded without shoes, and not grounded when I slipped them on. It works!! I am thrilled, because I can take this anywhere, and show people how you can be grounded to the earth.
