My wife's VW has a charcoal gray colored dipstick, and it is very easy to read with new oil. I just happened to read a blog on this same subject, and someone mentioned this paste. It is about the consistancy of jeweller's rouge. Just smear a little on the highest suspected reading, and pull it out. It changes color up to where the oil level resides. The color change is from pink to darker pink/light red. Doesn't sound like much of a change, but it is very distinct. A nice alternative for an all-to-common problem.
