desertcart.com: Ulysses: 9780801833847: Kenner, Hugh: Books

Review: The most important guide to Joyce's Ulysses - Hugh Kenner is himself a lovely writer and he presents his insights into Ulysses perfectly mirrored to the book itself. This is NOT a sentence by sentence breakdown of the novel (like Gifford's "Ulysses Annotated") but a hugely entertaining explanation of what Joyce was doing - the artifices and tools he used, his narrative inventions (far more than just "interior monologue...") and the broad parallels to Homer. My strong suggestion is read a chapter of Ulysses, then read the more-or-less corresponding section in Kenner, then read Joyce's chapter again with deeper appreciation (essentially a double reading, but after all, you are probably never going to read Ulysses again...).
Review: Better than Joyce’s book - It’s sort of unfortunate that Kenner spends his formidable charm and formidable erudition on an author who really has nothing to say, but Kenner does this with Pound, too, even though Pound never gets done spewing his fascist, racist, anti-Semitic vitriol. In comparison with Pound, Joyce is a pretty innocuous character. Neither author deserves Kenner’s charm and facility with words. He was a critic who was way more interesting than the writers he chose to write about.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The most important guide to Joyce's Ulysses
*by S***K on December 12, 2023*

Hugh Kenner is himself a lovely writer and he presents his insights into Ulysses perfectly mirrored to the book itself.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Better than Joyce’s book
*by M***F on July 28, 2023*

It’s sort of unfortunate that Kenner spends his formidable charm and formidable erudition on an author who really has nothing to say, but Kenner does this with Pound, too, even though Pound never gets done spewing his fascist, racist, anti-Semitic vitriol. In comparison with Pound, Joyce is a pretty innocuous character. Neither author deserves Kenner’s charm and facility with words. He was a critic who was way more interesting than the writers he chose to write about.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ulysses Unbound
*by B***7 on October 8, 2015*

Kenner occasionally misfires but he is always interesting. His interpretations of Ulysses are almost all right on, ofen original and new, even at this remove from when he wrote them. He is capable of giving the text the closest scrutiny but also keeps in mind the larger picture. And for Kenner, the larger picture is very large indeed.
