I did switch out the uptake tube for something taller, but I think the sponge works great as long as your air pump is working well too. It’s got a lot of surface because it’s rather wide and with the weighted bottom, it stays down. I’ve found it doesn’t fit an air stone though if you plan to use one, look for one that is a narrow cylinder instead of a sphere. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Would buy again and again! *by T***K on Reviewed in Canada on 29 October 2020* I absolutely love this filter. It does an amazing job of keeping my 30gal tank clean. I did make a modification to it found on YouTube inserting a bubble stone into it. If you're not good at this sort of thing I'd say don't do it as it works well without the mod. I don't have to clean it very often. It provides great surface area for beneficial bacteria. Tip - to clean, keep air pump running and put sponge filter in a large Ziploc bag before pulling it out of the tank and turning it off.
