I compared it against one of Fiskars' other models (selling out of the same desertcart listing) with fully closed loops for both the top and bottom of the handle, and this one is quite superior, providing more leverage while cutting, therefore it's easier on your hand and muscles, AND more effective at cutting. Plus, the blades are SHARP, and strong. The other Fiskars model wasn't bad at all, it was quite good, it's just that this one is significantly better; and its greater ease of cutting is quite noticeable and comes in handy when cutting cardboard boxes, as I do (from desertcart deliveries!). This design with the open top handle and the wide-loop bottom handle (the latter allows more fingers to hold it) not only provides more cutting leverage, but allows you to get whatever material you're cutting out of your way as you cut further and further into it. I also compared this item with yet another set of shears, that one purchased at Home Depot (made by Wiss), but it was definitely a nice set of shears that did a good job. I don't know how long these Fiskars will last, what with the open, uncovered spring that I wonder if it might become detached, but I bought three of these-- two more after being so pleased with the first one-- and they all three work equally great. By the way, there is a little plastic piece at the bottom of the handle that locks the two-piece handle together so that the blades stay together when stored. (I can see where that lock could easily become undone, however, but so far, that hasn't happened to me.) This is really a phenomenal product, and I can not only cut through thick cardboard boxes with it (I much prefer using this to a box cutter), I can also cut through double-thickness of those boxes when necessary; though there is a bit more difficulty then. I highly recommend this product for its intended uses. And don't let the unusual look of the handle scare you away-- it's actually one of the great features on this set of shears. Is there more than just plastic beneath your fingers?** A: That is not true, the tangs penetrate the handle by well over two inches ! **Q: I broke a pair of regular household scissors cutting through cotton balls, harder than you’d think. Would the 8” scissors be able to do this task?** A: After seeing your question I got a cotton ball and cut right though it. So these scissors will do the job!! **Q: Could these cut a rug?** A: I know that they will cut carpet that was put in a boat. They are heavy duty and know that the cutting of stuff in the yard that I can't use scissors or clippers with is what I need.
