It's like a wind-up alarm clock, you have to wind it for the alarm to go off and also for the timer to work. **Q: Does it make a ticking sound as it counts down?** A: It does. It’s not very loud at all though. **Q: If you don't turn it to 55 first, will it ring with a shorter ring? Or just no noise at all?** A: For best results you need to wind to 60 then set your time.
