Originally a West End stage production (opening in 1963) and later a successful film (in 1969), Oh What a Lovely War was inspired by the book the Donkeys. A smash hit when it opened, it brought back into favor many of the songs of the First World War era, songs that have continued to be popular music hall songs long after the war. With the show slated to return to the theatre where it was first staged (the Theatre Royal Stratford East) before transferring to the West End, and with the impending centenary of the First World war, these songs are sure to enjoy yet another revival of interest. This is NOT the "original soundtrack" of the Joan Littlewood classic, but a collection of original scratchy recordings of WWI-era songs, some of which show up in the play.
