Several free standing lace designers use these to attach embroidered 
pieces together for a three D design.
If you wanted,  you can sterilize them like anything else you want to sterilize.

A: Yes they are

**Q: How long is the end piece after the hinge?**
A: Very small - 1/2 inch

**Q: What is the max jaw opening size?**
A: It's very small.  I use this on Embroidery OnLine "Lace" designs.  You need it to pull the little knobs through the openings.
