The carbon filter get rid of smell. Two different things. Yes, you can use a different filter mix and match equipment. **Q: Is there no option to buy 2 fans and 1 controller?** A: No there is no option for buying 2 fans and 1 controller. If you do buy 2 fans I would get 2 s models and buy the controller separately. Saves a little bit of money and get the same results! **Q: I have read the reviews discussing the sizing issues with the inlet/outlet sizes being more 12.25 instead of 12. Has this issue been corrected?** A: If your trying to put that 12 inch flexible ducting you basically cant and just have to get aluminum tape. Its not that big of an issue though. With the tape it stays put. **Q: Can this fan be used to exhaust kitchen hoods (e.g. inline connected to a hood liner)?** A: I would not use such an expensive fan for a kitchen exhaust hood. The condensation and grease steam alone would gum it up and ruin it.
